Norwegian improv trio Parallax is releasing its first trio album since 2014, BIOMIMESIS – an album shaped by nature’s own principles. Biomimesis is about learning from nature’s solutions, and the trio has drawn inspiration from everything from the intricate textures of lichen to the balance and imbalance of large ecosystems. The music was created in close interaction with the surroundings at Madstun, the beautiful retreat of Jon Balke and Tone Myskja in Fall, where the landscape, sounds, and atmospheres filtered into the musical expression.
BIOMIMESIS exists in the tension between the organic and the electronic – an improvised sonic world where texture takes center stage. It is an acoustic electroacoustic expression, where the instruments dissolve into sonic phenomena, resonances, and structures inspired by nature’s own logic. The music is tactile and sensory, living in the surfaces and the smallest details.
With Fridtjof Lindeman at the controls and the trio in their most spontaneous and deeply listening mode, this is an album that breathes, grows, and moves – just like the world that inspired it. Evelina Dembacke’s stunning images of lichen structures and Nicolas Leirtrø’s album design tie everything together into a cohesive artistic whole.
Since 2008, the improvisation trio Parallax has been a living, breathing organism – always in motion, always searching for new sonic horizons. Rooted in improvisation, folk music, contemporary music, and other art forms, they create music that not only explores but also challenges the boundaries between genres and perspectives. It is in this tension – in the parallactic shift – that the genuine emerges.
Parallax has always sought new connections, thrown themselves into experiments, and collaborated with artists across genres and disciplines. This has not only resulted in many exciting projects but has also led to continuous artistic development and expanded perspectives – both for the trio and their collaborators. Along the way, they have built an impressive catalog of recordings, performances, and video works and have toured in 20 countries.
